Specialist RV Auto Electricians You Can Trust

Modern motorhomes rely on complex electrical systems to keep you comfortable, safe, and powered up off-grid. When those systems fail, it takes more than a standard mechanic to find the fault.

At Open Road Motorhomes, our Sydney workshop specialises in the unique electrical architecture of motorhomes and campervans. We understand how habitation electrics integrate with vehicle chassis systems, allowing us to accurately diagnose faults that general repairers often miss. Whether you are dealing with a battery that refuses to hold a charge or an inverter that keeps tripping, our experienced team delivers honest advice and permanent fixes.

Common Motorhome Electrical Faults We Fix

Electrical issues can be frustrating to track down. If you are experiencing any of these common symptoms, our diagnostic team can isolate the cause and provide a clear repair plan:

House Battery

Whether it is failing to charge from the alternator while driving, or not topping up when plugged into mains power.

12v Lighting and Appliance Failures

12v Lighting and Appliance Failures

Flickering lights, water pumps not engaging, or 12v fridges losing power unexpectedly.

240v Mains

240v Mains Hookup Issues

Safety switches tripping when you plug into a caravan park power pedestal, or specific 240v outlets not working inside the cabin.

Inverter

Inverter and Battery Management Faults

Error codes on your management screen, or inverters shutting down when under load.

Power Drain

Parasitic Power Drains

Batteries going flat while the motorhome is parked or in storage, even with all switches turned off.

Battery Testing and Replacement

Your deep-cycle batteries are the heart of your motorhome. We offer comprehensive load testing to determine the true health of your AGM or lithium batteries. If a replacement is needed, we supply and fit high-quality batteries suited to your specific travel style and power demands.

Battery Management Systems (BMS)

Battery Management Systems (BMS)

A faulty BMS can destroy expensive batteries. We diagnose, repair, and upgrade battery management systems, DC-to-DC chargers, and solar regulators to ensure your power is being captured and stored efficiently.

Free Camping Upgrades

We don’t just fix faults.

We regularly upgrade motorhomes and campervans to make them more capable off-grid.

If you want to spend more time free camping and less time hunting for powered sites, our team can assess your current setup and recommend the right upgrades for your travel style and budget.

Popular upgrades include:

Lithium (LiFePO4) battery installations for greater capacity and longer cycle life

Expanded solar panel capacity for faster recharging in all conditions

DC-to-DC charger upgrades for more efficient charging from your vehicle alternator

MPPT solar regulator replacements for improved solar harvest

12V system rewiring and load management for cleaner, safer power distribution

Inverter installations to run 240V appliances off-grid

Whether you’re planning a lap of Australia or just want the freedom to stop wherever you like, we’ll make sure your motorhome has the power to back it up.

How Our Diagnostic Process Works

We do not believe in guessing or blindly replacing expensive parts. Our approach to electrical repairs is methodical and transparent:

1

Initial Assessment

We listen to the symptoms you have experienced and conduct a visual inspection of your electrical setup.

2

Systematic Fault Finding

Using professional diagnostic equipment, we trace the circuits to isolate the exact cause of the failure, whether it is a degraded cable, a blown component, or a failing battery.

3

Clear Quotation

Before any repair work begins, we explain the problem in plain English and provide a clear quote for the necessary repairs.

4

Quality Repair

Our technicians complete the repair using high-quality, marine-grade components designed to withstand the vibrations and harsh conditions of Australian travel.

Meet the Dream Team

We are your Motorhome and travel experts

David

Having left the UK in 2006,
I travelled across the other side of the world on my own adventure ending up in Australia in early 2007.

With all my family and friends living in the UK, I had to build my own new network and get into the Aussie way of life.

By accident, I started
working in the RV industry selling campervans, motorhomes and caravans to the thousands of adventurous spirits that call Australia home. I soon realized that these people all had the same passionate excitement for
life, loved the freedom of exploring the country and were full of wisdom and stories from around the world.

I haven’t looked back and take great pride in being a part of such a life changing experience for the community of travellers that I meet every day.

“Genuine travel has no destination. Travellers do not go somewhere, but constantly discover they are somewhere else.” – James Carse

To me this quote says it all, it’s the reason why I love what I do.

Travelling is in my blood. I met the love of my life somewhere far from home and ever since we have been seeking new places and meeting new faces with our young family.

Now, together with Open Road Motorhomes, we are helping everyone live the life of their dreams.

Frequently Asked Questions About Motorhome Electrics

Why is my motorhome house battery not charging while driving?

This is often caused by a blown fuse between the vehicle’s alternator and the habitation battery, a faulty voltage-sensitive relay (VSR), or a failing DC-to-DC charger. It can also be due to poor earth connections or the battery itself reaching the end of its lifespan.

Any work involving the 240v mains power system in your motorhome must be completed by a licensed electrician to comply with Australian safety standards. While 12v systems do not legally require a licensed electrician, the complexity of modern motorhome wiring means it should only be handled by experienced RV technicians to prevent fire risks and equipment damage.

The lifespan of a motorhome battery depends heavily on how it is used and maintained. Traditional AGM batteries typically last 3 to 5 years if they are not regularly discharged below 50%. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries can last up to 10 years or more, as they can handle deeper discharges and more charge cycles.

Yes. If you are planning to spend more time free-camping, we can upgrade your system to handle the increased demand. This often includes installing higher-capacity lithium batteries, upgrading the battery management system, and fitting larger inverters to run 240v appliances off-grid.
