Motorhome Solar Diagnostics & Repairs in Sydney
Don’t let a failing solar system cut your off-grid adventures short. If your panels are not charging or your regulator is throwing error codes, our expert technicians will pinpoint the fault and get your power flowing again.
Expert Fault Finding for Motorhome Solar Systems
True freedom on the open road relies on a dependable solar setup. When your system stops performing, it is easy to assume the panels are broken. However, solar failures can stem from degraded wiring, blown fuses, faulty regulators, or even the batteries themselves.
At Open Road Motorhomes, we do not just blindly replace expensive components. Our Glendenning workshop specialises in comprehensive solar diagnostics. We test your entire system from the roof to the battery bank, isolating the exact cause of the problem to provide a targeted, cost-effective repair.
Is Your Solar System Struggling? Common Symptoms We Check
If you are relying on generator power more often than you should, your solar system might be failing. We regularly diagnose and repair systems exhibiting these common issues:
Panels Not Charging
The sun is shining, but your battery monitor shows no incoming charge from the solar array.
Low Power Output
Your system is producing significantly less amperage than it used to, struggling to keep up with basic 12v appliance usage.
Regulator Error Codes
The solar charge controller is flashing warning lights, displaying error codes, or constantly resetting.
Overcharging Batteries
A critical fault where the regulator fails to stop charging, causing batteries to boil, swell, or become permanently damaged.
Intermittent Charging
The system cuts in and out unpredictably, often caused by loose connections, corroded wiring, or thermal cut-outs.
How We Test and Repair Your Solar Setup
Finding a solar fault requires a systematic approach. Here is what is included when you book a diagnostic assessment with our team:
Panel Output Testing
We measure the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current of your roof-mounted panels to ensure they are actually generating power. We also inspect for physical damage, water ingress, or micro-cracks.
Wiring and Connection Checks
Solar cables are exposed to harsh UV rays and constant vibration. We test the integrity of the wiring from the roof down to the controller, checking for voltage drop, corrosion, and loose MC4 connectors.
Charge Controller (Regulator) Assessment
We test the solar regulator to confirm it is correctly converting the panel voltage and safely delivering the right charge profile to your specific battery type.
Battery Health Check
A solar system is only as good as the batteries storing the power. We load-test your house batteries to ensure they are capable of receiving and holding the charge.
Once we have identified the fault, we provide a clear, upfront quote for the necessary repairs, whether that means replacing a corroded cable, fitting a new MPPT regulator, or upgrading a damaged panel.
Solar Upgrades and Replacements
Sometimes, older solar systems are simply too degraded to repair economically, or they no longer meet your travel needs. If your system requires replacement, we supply and install high-efficiency panels and premium MPPT solar regulators from trusted brands.

Having left the UK in 2006, I travelled across the other side of the world on my own adventure ending up in Australia in early 2007.
With all my family and friends living in the UK, I had to build my own new network and get into the Aussie way of life.
By accident, I started working in the RV industry selling campervans, motorhomes and caravans to the thousands of adventurous spirits that call Australia home. I soon realized that these people all had the same passionate excitement for life, loved the freedom of exploring the country and were full of wisdom and stories from around the world.
I haven’t looked back and take great pride in being a part of such a life changing experience for the community of travellers that I meet every day.

“Genuine travel has no destination. Travellers do not go somewhere, but constantly discover they are somewhere else.” – James Carse
To me this quote says it all, it’s the reason why I love what I do.
Travelling is in my blood. I met the love of my life somewhere far from home and ever since we have been seeking new places and meeting new faces with our young family.
Now, together with Open Road Motorhomes, we are helping everyone live the life of their dreams.

Cherie and I recently purchased a motorhome from Open Road Motorhomes at Glendenning NSW, and our experience with the team has been excellent. What we particularly appreciated was that there was absolutely no pushy behaviour or slick sales tactics. It was simply genuine, friendly people running a good business, providing quality service and offering a great range of both new and second-hand motorhomes. Most importantly, they had the perfect motorhome for us at a price we were happy with. A special mention to Eddie, who spent a considerable amount of time with Cherie and me showing us through the different motorhomes they had available, explaining the various options and answering all of our questions. He listened to us, understood what we were looking for and helped us find the motorhome that best suited our needs. Once we found the one we loved, Eddie took the time to walk us through how everything worked and made sure we properly understood the vehicle. We enjoyed his approach and loved the van they had there so much, that we decided to purchase a motorhome and pay our deposit on the spot. Kelly has also been fantastic to deal with throughout the purchase and settlement process. Communication has been professional and friendly, and the whole transaction has felt straightforward and comfortable. Even our request for a test drive was simple and no problem at all. During the process, the team also identified a crack in the upper rear spoiler that we hadn't picked up ourselves and immediately arranged for it to be replaced before handover. That sort of thing gives you confidence that you're dealing with people who actually care about what they're selling. Buying a motorhome is a significant purchase, and it makes a huge difference dealing with people you feel you can trust. They even guided us for insurance for our new van which was helpful and appreciated. Over the many months Cherie and I spent researching and searching for the right motorhome, we visited and dealt with quite a few dealerships through NSW and Queensland. Along the way we encountered plenty of slick salespeople using the old-school pressure tactics, trying to create urgency or pushing us into making a commitment while we were standing there. At times some of it was annoying and, frankly, almost laughable. There was none of that with Eddie or Kelly. They simply listened, answered our questions and did their best to help us find the right motorhome. We were left to make our own decision without pressure, and we really appreciated that approach. We're now very excited to collect our Jayco RM23 - 4 motorhome and start enjoying it. Thanks again to Eddie, Kelly and the entire Open Road Motorhomes team. Based on our experience, we would happily recommend them to anyone looking for a motorhome.+0Posted on Google![]()

I can’t recommend this Open Road Motorhomes highly enough. After weeks of frustration trying to sell my motorhome through consignment with another dealer in Canberra, dealing with uncertainty, ongoing negotiations and having the agreement ultimately fall through after it had already been accepted, this experience was an absolute breath of fresh air. From my first conversation with Phil, everything was straightforward. He made me a fair offer, explained the process clearly, arranged collection of the motorhome from Canberra, handled all of the paperwork and transferred the funds directly into my account. It was exactly what I had hoped selling a motorhome would be. Having now experienced both consignment and an outright purchase, I honestly wish I’d gone down this path from the beginning. Selling outright removed all the stress, uncertainty and endless back-and-forth, and allowed me to move on knowing everything had been taken care of. If you’re weighing up whether to consign your motorhome or sell it outright, my personal experience is that an outright sale was by far the simpler, more transparent and less stressful option. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Phil and the team at Open Road Motorhomes.Posted on Google![]()

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had a wonderful experience with Open Road in Sydney when purchasing our Jayco motorhome. From the beginning, the team was very friendly, helpful and professional. They made us feel comfortable throughout the whole process and were always happy to answer our questions. We had a couple of small issues after purchasing the motorhome, including the antenna and battery/power supply, but Open Road looked after us extremely well. They replaced the battery and fixed the antenna issue without hesitation. We really appreciate their kindness, honesty and excellent customer service. It made a big difference to us, and we would happily recommend Open Road to anyone looking to purchase a motorhome or caravan. Thank you to the whole team at Open Road Sydney for looking after us so well! 🚐❤️Posted on Google![]()

I am totally impressed with this company and the staff I dealt with namely Eddie and Kayla. I felt at ease the whole time and everything flowed very smoothly. I flew to Sydney from Toowoomba to make the purchase. Eddie booked Ubers for me from my motel to the dealership. After looking over my (to be motor home) Eddie then booked Ubers to and from my bank to make the transfer of funds. Kayla then took me step by step explaining everything I needed to know about how things worked on my motor home. They had my Avan detailed while I was waiting and they even found a few defects which they fixed. One being a faulty water pump and the other a cracked roof vent and a few other minor things. All were replaced with new parts. I cannot fault the service. I highly recommend!Posted on Google![]()

Open Road Motorhomes was exceptional to deal with, from our first phone call when enquiring about the motorhome to the final handover. A big thanks to Eddie from sales, the ladies in the office Kelly & Kayla that handled all the paperwork and covered the handover. Also want to say a massive thanks to Nathan in the workshop for everything he did! Nathan you were super helpful and always gave my husband the time to ask any questions. We couldn't have asked for a better experience in buying our first motorhome. The service was outstanding and so professional. We would buy through this company again and are so happy that we did not buy through a private sale. They even delivered the vehicle to us in QLD as we could not get down to Sydney to pick it up. The lady that delivered the vehicle was also fantastic in handing over the vehicle to us. We are on our first trip in the motorhome at Stanthorpe and are absolutely loving it. Thanks for a great experience Open Road Motorhomes. Regards, Frayne & Deb Bloor. Brisbane+3Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. Frequently Asked Questions About Motorhome Solar
Why is my solar panel showing voltage but not charging the battery?
This is a very common issue. It usually means the solar panel is generating power (voltage), but there is a break in the circuit preventing the current (amps) from reaching the battery. This could be a blown fuse between the regulator and the battery, a faulty solar regulator, or a severely degraded battery that refuses to accept a charge.
How do I know if my solar regulator is broken?
Signs of a faulty regulator include the unit feeling excessively hot to the touch, error codes on the display, a complete lack of lights/display, or the battery voltage rising above safe levels (overcharging). If the panels are producing power but the regulator shows zero output to the batteries, it likely requires replacement.
Can I mix different sizes or brands of solar panels on my motorhome?
While it is physically possible, it is generally not recommended unless they are wired through separate solar regulators. Wiring mismatched panels together in a single array can drag the performance of the entire system down to match the weakest panel.
Do motorhome solar panels lose efficiency over time?
Yes. Most quality solid solar panels degrade by about 0.5% to 1% per year. However, flexible panels (often glued directly to the roof) tend to degrade much faster due to heat buildup and lack of airflow, often failing entirely within 3 to 5 years.
